• The Holy Rosary

  • What is it?

The Rosary is a prayer which is designed to help us reflect on Jesus’ life with the help of Mary. It began in the Middle Ages when people were illiterate but wanted to pray the 150 Psalms. A string of 150 beads gave the people a way to pray the most important prayers of our faith – Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.

  • Why pray the Rosary?

  • In 1571 the Turks sent a large fleet of soldiers to overtake Italy and Europe. A strategic naval battle was at Lepanto. Catholic forces were greatly out-numbered, but the Pope asked everyone to pray the Rosary. Through the intercession of Our Lady the invaders were defeated for the first time in 70 years. Mary was given a new title, Our Lady of Victory, and is now known as Our Lady the Rosary.

  • How to pray the Rosary

  • There are 4 sets of Mysteries to the Rosary which take us through the life of Jesus together with Mary. They are Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious decades, consisting of 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and a Glory Be for each decade.
